The Story of the Demir-Xomus

In ancient times, a beautiful young girl was deeply in love with a young blacksmith, and he with her. But the girl's father forced her to marry another man because he was rich. Her beloved was left alone, consumed with despair. The bereaved young man made himself a demir-xomus and began to play melodies full of sadness and great beauty, pouring out all the feeling that overflowed from his soul. He soon forgot about everything else, even eating and drinking. All he did was play and play, trying to drown his sorrows in his music. One day, in the depths of despair, the young man jumped from a very high cliff and fell to his death. When the girl discovered what had happened to the young man she loved, she threw herself off the very same cliff. Only the xomus forged by the hands of the unhappy blacksmith remained. Ever since, the demir-xomus has been known as the symbol of lovers.
